What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care is a health profession dedicated to diagnosing and treating disorders related to the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, and understanding how these disorders impact overall health. It is particularly effective for addressing neuromusculoskeletal issues such as back pain, neck pain, joint pain in the arms or legs, and headaches.

Chiropractors, also known as doctors of chiropractic or chiropractic physicians, employ a hands-on, drug-free approach to health care. This involves comprehensive patient evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment. Chiropractors are trained to offer a wide range of diagnostic services and are skilled in recommending therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises. They also provide valuable guidance on nutrition, diet, and lifestyle.

In assessing patients, chiropractors use clinical examinations, laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging, and other interventions to determine the suitability of chiropractic treatment.

One of the primary techniques used by chiropractors is spinal manipulation, also referred to as chiropractic adjustment. This technique aims to restore joint mobility by applying a controlled force to joints that have become restricted in movement due to tissue injury. Such injuries can result from single traumatic events, such as improper lifting, or from repetitive stress, such as poor posture over long periods. Tissue injuries often lead to inflammation, pain, and reduced function. By adjusting the affected joints and tissues, chiropractic care helps restore mobility, alleviate pain and muscle tightness, and support the healing process.

While chiropractic adjustments are generally well-tolerated, some patients might experience mild soreness or aching after treatment, similar to post-exercise discomfort. This typically resolves within 12 to 48 hours.

Acupuncture

Chiropractic acupuncture integrates the art, science, and philosophy of treating disease and injury through the stimulation of specific points on the skin that modulate energy flow. As an approved specialty within the chiropractic field, it employs various methods of stimulation, including needle insertion, electrical stimulation, light, heat, and pressure.

This approach addresses a wide range of health conditions, encompassing all body systems and tissues. It places particular emphasis on the interrelationship between the spine, nervous system, and meridian system. Chiropractic acupuncture incorporates diagnostic and therapeutic principles and procedures aligned with those taught in acupuncture programs accredited by CCE, state chiropractic associations, and post-graduate certified instructors.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound therapy utilizes sound waves to address musculoskeletal issues, with a particular focus on reducing inflammation associated with conditions such as tendinitis and bursitis. This therapy has been a cornerstone of physical rehabilitation for decades, its widespread application making it a defining element of physical therapy practice.

Massage Therapy

Manual manipulation of soft tissues—including muscles, connective tissues, tendons, and ligaments—plays a crucial role in enhancing overall health and well-being. As part of our chiropractic treatments, we incorporate various massage modalities to support and complement the benefits of chiropractic care.

Trigger Point Therapy

A trigger point is a localized area of tightness within muscle tissue that can cause pain to radiate to other parts of the body. For instance, a trigger point in the back may lead to referred pain in the neck, which can, in turn, create discomfort in the head. This chain reaction illustrates how muscle tension can contribute to widespread pain and symptoms in different areas of the body.

Chinese Cupping

In our office, Chinese cupping therapy is employed as a method of myofascial release to relax muscles and tendons while enhancing circulation to chronic injuries. This ancient Chinese practice involves creating localized suction on the skin, which is believed to stimulate blood flow and promote healing. Suction can be achieved using heat (fire) or mechanical devices (hand or electrical pumps).

Gua Sha/Graston Technique

Gua Sha is an ancient healing technique frequently utilized by practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). During this procedure, a lubricating medium, such as massage oil, is applied to the skin in the treatment area. A smooth-edged instrument is then used to perform short or long strokes on the skin, typically in the area of pain or along the back parallel to the spine. This motion generates raised redness (petechiae) or bruising (ecchymosis).

The primary indication for gua sha is pain, whether acute or chronic. In TCM, pain is often attributed to stagnation of blood in the affected area. The principle behind gua sha is that it can break up this stagnation, promote smooth blood flow, and thereby alleviate pain.

While gua sha is most commonly employed to treat pain, TCM practitioners also use it to address a range of other conditions, including asthma, bronchitis, colds, flu, fever, heatstroke, fibromyalgia, strains, sprains, and muscle spasms.

Active Release Technique

Active Release Technique (ART) is an advanced soft tissue system and movement-based massage technique designed to address issues affecting muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. ART is effective for treating a variety of conditions, including headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow.

These conditions often stem from overused muscles, and ART is renowned for its ability to resolve such issues quickly and effectively.
